We have been involved with the NZSB for 6 years
now!
It enhances oral language. Basically at Toko School we believe
that oral language development is the number
one literacy needed to succeed in this changing world. We aim to facilitate
this learning with a special program in addition to the standard
oral language in schools....
Clearly reading
and writing is essential, but speech... WOW now that is the way
to make an impression.
So along with a classroom program that plans for oral language development,
we focus on oral language development for about 4 weeks and prepare
for NZSB exams!!
An independent assessor comes to the school and all children from Year
3 up prepare for their exam. The exam has about three parts all of
which look closely at the child's ability to communicate!
The cost of the program is about $30 per student, so
this adds up quickly. However, of off set costs in 2008 we were successful
in getting EDI
funding to
continue our oral language
focus for the next three years! I am very pleased with this
as it means that the concept will be deeply ingrained into the culture
of the school.
Importantly is the teachers development too! The program
needs to become sustainable!
In 2008 the most common achievement level of the children was DISTINCTION!
In 2009 we did not reach this level of acievement.... but all children
from year 3 up were again involved and we believe that the stringent
marking will be beneficial to the program.
