Well.......................................
Prep is an integrated unit of work which allows children to form ventures or businesses
and to design , make and sell a particular product or service.
At Toko
School we are in our third year of developing the Prep economy and community.
Each year it involves new challenges and rewards. It is an exciting time for both
staff and children alike. It is all about making an economy or a community happen
within your school. The objectives tie in beautifully into the Technology and
Social Studies syllabusThere is a currency called schollars which children
earn. They either get paid by the hour or are on contract. Basically within a
business the children make all the necessary decisions to ensure the success of
their venture. The development of systems of accountability has been an intregal
part of the ventures. The school bank operates under the same systems as a "real
bank" (apart from the ability to make money!!!!) All resources needed within
the Prep economy are purchased through the Warehouse. As the unit develops
the need for rules and regulations arises. This is where we have developed a governing
body. These children have been selected from the different ventures and they have
been identified as having leadership potential. These children decide on how to
use of the tax which is gathered at 20% for every schollar earned. They also assist
in the solution to problems which affect the entire group. It is all very much
developmental. I am very pleased with the outcomes of this work and it is very
popular with the children.
Prep is a major focus during term 2 of the school year. I hope
you get a chance to come to a Market Day and see the event.
We hold a trade fair near the beginning. It is a great little innovation
where the children that had developed business plans are able to meet and
demonstrate
their ideas with the other group of childrewn that had developed their C.V';s
and are looking for employment. This was neat and something we hadn't done
before.
This
year we have more entrepeneurs than ever before. It is our third year so I guess
this is to be expected. The quality of the businesses and their ability is very
promising at this eary stage. We will keep you posted on how it all proceeds and
we hope to see you at school on Market Day, if not before.
Market
Day
This was great and it really sorted out the businesses. We have
a very buoyant economy and nearly all businesses are on track to make a profit
and pay back their initial loans. The Market Day is loud, busy, full on and
very
exciting. Congratualtions to Room 4 who again put on an excellent show. Their
business is able to survive due to a Arts grant from the Council. We didn't
have
any foreign currency at the first Market day. We do this for a very good reason
and that is to check out how well businesses are fairing. Have they made a product
that will sell? Has their internal management systems been good enough to identify
their current financial position? Has they looked after their staff and in turn
had loyal and hard working staff. Without external financial interest, all these
issues become apparent.
Market day 2005 was great. This year new innovations
included a movie making business which documented the program pretty well.
An encourageing survey was
held after Prep 2005 to ascertain the children's ongoing interest and commitment
to the program. It showed a very positive result.
