We believe that a lot of enrichment and extension occurs within the classroom program and capable teachers are able to both extend children at one end and support other children's learning at the other. However, of course within a class of 25 this can become difficult. It is never the less the backbone of the schools attention to children with special abilities.

Toko School is looking at the way we deliver a program for children deemed to be "gifted". An important aspect of the definition of giftedness is "task completion". The use of the word can gifted be bandied around. At Toko Schools the definition of giftedness includes the important element of task completion. From 2005 children identified as gifted will be clearly identified and placed on a specific register.

In 2006 we started an interest and talent afternoon. Each Monday afternoon, for 13 weeks, children had the opportunity to really dig deep into an area of talent or interest.
Choices were: junior science, senior science, flash animation, recorder, garage band music, sports and recreation, growing plants and the environment, Japanese, junior arts and Theater Sports. This is a good range of the multiple intelligence s....
Additional teachers were hired to allow the groups to be as small as possible, with most being less than 10 children. Children had to display a talent or interest in the program to start with. I believe it has been very successful and a welcome addition to our talent program at Toko School. Other aspects of the program that provide for targetted children include:

I think I'm turning Japanese!!
A highlight of our extension program is our Japanese language sessions, run by Ms. Howatson on a Thursday
afternoon. This has been for children in years 5,6,7 and 8 that have shown high ability with language. They started at
the beginning of term 2 2003, and it is now running in 2004 and on into 2005 and 2006.

Other enrichments have included:
Musical extensions run by Mrs Cathy Trueman. Children have either learned the recorder or the guitar and sometimes the piano. We now have an expert guitar teacher in the school every week delivering guitar lessons. Costs are incurred and covered by parents that are interested.

Newspaper in Education. This has been traditionally a group that have received enrichment outside the classroom program. Children are worked with for four weeks prior to the competition. This does not happen every year, but is a regular event.

In 2004 and 2005 and 2006 the NZ Herald competition where classes develop a newspaper will be an extension opportunity for both a Year 5/6 group and a Year 7/8 group.

Movie Making Extension Groups. This is great fun and occurs at times throughout the school year. IN 2006 selected children were involved in the Bard Wired Film Festival.

Methanex Quiz. Children are selected and tutored toward this event and the methanex mathematics investigations.

End of year production. Although all children in year 7 and 8 are involved this is clearly an area where children are selected for extension through their ability!

NZSB examinations. This is clearly an extension opportunity for all the children enrolled at Toko School from Year 3 up! This year. The exams are scheduled at a specific time each year which children are prepared for through the classroom program.

Primary Enterprise Projects
The entire program runs through term 2. Children create their own businesses and by Year 8 it is anticipated that all children will be entrepeneur's!

Lunchtime flash club and chess club.
