WELCOME TO TERM 1 2010

Some key events of this term include:
Alison starting her Reading Recovery training. This ensures that our 6 year olds that are in need of a boost in their reading will surely receive it! Great news!

All the CTELA schools met on Thursday the 4th of Feb. to organise the years sporting and cultural fixtures and dates!

The big INQUIRY UNIT of this term is FEAST OR FAMINE.

It is looking into how parts of the world have such plentiful supply of water and food and how others DO NOT!
In the senior classes they were looking at the reasons behind this.
In the junior rooms the focus was more on the similarities and differences in the lives of children in poor countries and comparing it to our own lives!

Teachers inquiring into their own practise3!! What a mouth full, but what a start we have made. This is an important part of our annual plan 2010 and now teachers have their own blog set up to record their observations nd thoughts on how they are impacting on children's learning!

Swimming IS BIG
Every year we put 4 weeks into intensive swimming! This year is no different. Children are swimming two times a day.
The hot weather is meaning that the pool always has children in there!!

Turnbull Cup.
Here our elite swimmers are competing against children from other school. Again we competed very well, with many highlights, one being regan winning the Yr 8 boy championship!

Parents Interviews
Two days were set aside, 23rd and 24th to allow all parents to come to school and talk about the beginning of the new year at school. This was very well supported as usual!

Smart board Training
Teachers are really getting capable using their smart boards!!!! This year we will be having 5 sessions with our trainer Alison, and we started off well on 25th of Feb..

Assemblies
These are held weekly, but fortnightly with parents in attendance. This week it was Room 2's assembly and what a positive example it was of children demonstrating their learning to a wider audience.

MATHLETICS
A real hit in Room 5 has been successful and may well lead to a school wide purchase of this product. It seems that the children were highly motivated and engrossed in the competitive side of this learning tool! Will have to research further!

Friday the 5th of March
SWIMMING SPORTS with all our colleague schools.
Toko School was in full chant!! What a fun day with a huge haul of certificates showing off our learning in this area!!

FAMILY DAY
The entire school wet to the Pools in New Plymouth. Partly as an assessment of our swimming skills. Each Yr 8 child can swim 200m. Most year 7 children can too!
Each class had its aquatic challenge! For the rest of the day it was slides and lunches and talks and a really easy, enjoyable Family Day OUT!!

ATHLETICS SPORTS PREPARATIONS
We have all now been out getting ready for the athletics sports at the end of term 1. We think it is important to prepare the children well for this event that we host. As such we;we have been out two or three afternoons a week learning to run , jump and throw!!!

Excellent helpers in Room 5 have been setting out the equipment and making it all work smoothly!

Well at the end if this term we SADLY we say goodbye to our Deputy Principal Charlaine! She has been here for 4 year and one term! We will all miss her! Good luck at your new school, Charlaine, Turuturu Primary School in Hawera.

Near the end of the term the Toko School BOT appointments committee has appointed Shannon OBrien as the new DP of Toko School. Sadly she can not start for about 6 weeks!
Richard will be in room 5 during the interim!!
