Welcome
to Term 3 2007
A big term ahead with: Speech board exams, debating, methanex maths spectacular,
CAMP, McLeod Shild games and more!!
Friday the 20th of July
We had a really neat disco on Friday night. In fact I'd say it was one
of the best! The theme was Heroes nd lots and lots of children arrived
dressed up! It was great to have MArg Simpson, Batman and Superman
there to help out the PTA. The Hall rocked! We used our own sound system
for the first time along with a laptop and this seemed to woek well
enough. Perhaps not quite the clarity I would have liked but good enough.
Big thanks to the PTAfor their work and this time the Council had input.
The Douglas Challenge this week was children using their manners! It
was a good one. Lots of good wnet out of their way to exhibit them!!!
In the end it was too tough to call, so the Douglas challege was one
by all children.... It will be in the different classrooms one day
a week this week... with Room 4 making up a new challenge this week!
Douglas seems in good heart.
August 17th
The rugby and the netball went well this year... The boys got through to
the semi finals and were eliminated by Ngaere in a tough close game.
The girls did not make the semi finals this year. They were ravaged by
illness!! Big thanks to both coaches: Gavin Jordan and Kay Shearer.
September 2nd!
Amazing mthematics results:
Great results for the recent Methanex Mathematics Spectacular!
Yr 8 Group Investigation First Place Nicole Shearer and Brooke Burch
Yr 8 Math’s in the Work Place First Place Ethan Roberts and Jordan
Groat
Yr 8 Statistical Investigation Second Place Sally Mitchell and Elysse
Milne
Yr 8 Quiz Team Third Place Frank Chen, Nicole Shearer, Ethan Roberts.
Yr 7 Group Investigation First Place Olivia Hunger and Jacinda West
Yr 7 Group Investigation Second Place Ila Earney and Emily Howatson
It is very significant coming third in the Yr 8 quiz (after coming 4th
in 2006). We have 13 year 8 children compared with 200 from Devon or
Highlands Intermediate! So it is quite an achievement! More than anything
to me this is a continuation of a high standard being set in this curriculum
area!
Buddy Day
This was great. well done our School Council! Kids were partnered up
with someone new for morning tea and half of lunch. PLus the children
showed each othr their rooms adn their books!! Great idea!
Room 5 Camp!
We had an AWESOME CAMP. We went up the mountain
(Ruapehu)Monday Tuesday and Wednesday, with a deteriorating weather
forecast but improving
weather!!
A special
thank you to our camp parents that were so helpful on camp. Bernice Mitchell
and Celia Howatson were camp MUMS and then loads of cool DADS: Shane
Spencer, Bill Jager, Graeme Shaw and Andrew Weir. The exemplary behaviour
of the children (and parents … and teachers) on camp has ensured
that camp planning for 2008 will have to continue! Seems crazy I know
but we must plan ahead for a camp in 2008. The cost of $300 has been
static for about 5 years and I sincerely hope to maintain this figure
in 2008. Here is advance warning for parents and children in Year 7 and
8 in 2008 that this will need to be budgeted for! Camp is not an optional
extra at Toko School. It is embedded in the culture of the school and
is more importantly just an enormous amount of fun and learning for the
Year 7 and 8 students involved. So please consider the cost involved
early and prepare for this financial undertaking in 2008. There was again
an effective fundraising group that was able to significantly dent the
real cost of camp! Each year this is an organised possibility.
Speech Board Exams
This is our 4th year of speech
Board exams. Mrs Boyle was very complimentary about our children and I
am sure that
they have done very well (again). What a neat innovation at Toko School.
Expensive too! It costs in excess of $2400 for children from Yr
3 up to independently assessed.! But we can see the development in
our children so it is well worth it! The calssroom programs have been very
focussed in the development of oral language and I beleive well prepared!!
Welll, why wouldn't they be!!
