Units for the year, SOME of which, involving our Feedback Sheets... -

Each term we plan and prepare a unit which operates right across the school

After the initial unit each term, teachers plan and prepare another significant unit based on the interests and needs of the children. This second unit also has a feedback sheet for children and parents.

Feedback Sheet

A mathematical unit focusing on research and investigations skills in a mathematical context. This is for Years 5 to 8. Year 7 and 8 spend up to 4 weeks in preparation. Work heads to the Methanex Spectacular competition in NP .Awesome Results
Year 5 and 6 more like two weeks.

We enter into the group investigations for Year 7 and 8 rather than other areas as I believe it develops a cooperative atmosphere in the classroom however could be a good individual project for keen kids to complete at home..

A feedback sheet.

SCIENCE

This is about melding a growing knowledge of early NZ with a school performance for Grand parents... and other extended family members.
We will prepare, invite Grandparents in, share the classrooms, share lunch, and then all head to the Toko School Hall for a performance! A relatively short time frame to prepare so Imagine it will dominate classroom programs!!!!

Year 7 and 8 Mathematical Investigations ..I believe that Year 5 and 6 will also be involved in much smaller but purposeful investigations in mathematics.

Playgrounds have become to safe in NZ schools!
A great topic for speaking and writing! Debates are on the agenda, and perhaps this is a real opportunity to write explanations as well!

Bending and extending light!
Well it might get a bit lost in the rush.. but we have purchased $600 of resources to be able to better deliver the science objectives around light. Science in the classroom is a focus at Toko School. ANy look at the planning or a view back through the calendar will show a continued effort to bring science forward!

This is McLeod and Hurlestone Shield term! Lots of school rugby and netball . The first 6 weeks are all go for this event for Yr 7 and 8

Senior School Camp.

NZ Speech Board Exams
A MAJOR school wide focus. The actual exams are scheduled for Week 8

Preparation any less than 4 weeks leaves the children under prepared. However, be careful not to memorize the content. It is a fine line between the two.

We completed this in 2004, and 2005 and 2006 and 2007 and 2008. I believe this has had very positive results with children's oral language developing and their confidence developing too.

Please note that staff have a new syllabus and this should be read !! A very clear link with the school charter outlining oral language as the basis of all other learning! We are maintaining this initiative in 2009 at a cost of over $2000, however in 2009 this is covered through a 2008 EDI Application to the Ministry of Education.
Children are involved in preparation for a full four weeks to allow them the time needed to be successful.
A feedback sheet.

The children in Year 7 and 8 head to whakapapa between the 7th and 11th of September. I predict perfect weather, and a great time for all!
