2005 School Calendar

2005 Calendar Units for the year, SOME of which, involving our Feedback Sheet s... -	At the beginning of each term we plan and prepare a unit which operates right across the school, Year 1 to 8! After the initial unit each term, teachers plan and prepare another significant unit based on the interests and needs of the children. This second unit also has a feedback sheet for children and parents.		Other School Events
EXIT			Senior Swimming Sports at Stratford Pools with our new schools! Both junior and senior.11th March Junior Sports 14th March Learning at School Conference in Rotorua for Principal as lead teacher in ICTPD contract. Stratford Mini conference re ICTPD ...All teachers involved. This is a Teacher only day, March 4th. INFOLINK Professional Development Megan, Claire, Heather and Kelly are all involved in INFOLINK. A information literacy paper which will be a significant ask, but will have a powerful influence of the classroom program. Tabloid Sports at Midhirst School 11 April Cathy training as a reading recovery teacher. ERO review 11th April to 14th.ERO
Stars of Learning... This is a new school wide theme. It is a melding of aspects of our reward system in the school (previously known as merit mentions) and our charter. It is what is important around here! Now known as Learning Stars. We want to let the children know all about them and encourage their language and use throughout the school. School culture, Learning how to learn	Focus of the first three weeks is developing classroom rules, expectations, routines, book layout, presentations, IT standards and shared beliefs. The new stars of learning will also be introduced to the children. These are school wide focus on: Partnership, personal best, challenging curriculum, learning environments, foundation skills and learning how to learn.
What is so Special about Taranaki? Science / Social Studies	A 4 to 5 week unit focusing on Taranaki. The children will discover what is special about Taranaki, going back through history to the Maori Wars through Dickie Barret and the Taranaki Stories and then what of the future! Look at the Patea River from Trips out of school are planned. Look at the Search and Re sue operation and the need for mountain safety. School visit to Dawson falls School visit to Wilkies Pools School visit to Wainongongoro Hut
Swimming and Water SAFETY	Basic Skills for each level of the school. Clearly water confidence in the early years through to stroke development and then competence in a variety of strokes.
Term 2
Primary Enterprise Projects This will end up being about a 7 week unit Technology Essential Skills	Link to the program descriptions. All children in the school involved in a variety of ways from Entrepeneur to a program designed for the younger students.This is a feedback sheet unit		Jones Cup Day. A little later due to field development Market Day Interschool debates for Year 7 and 8 at Toko School Interschool Chess Competition
	ANP Advance Numeracy Project will be starting. This is a Professional Development contract for the teachers and the children. ANP will focus on the delivery of the number strand and involve a minimum of 1 hour a day of mathematics. This is a big development for the children and teachers involved.
Methnex Investigations Mathematics	A Year 7 and 8 unit focusing on research and investigations skills in a mathematical context. We enter into the group investigations for year 7 and 8 rather than other areas as I believe it develops a cooperative atmosphere in the classroom. A feedback sheet.
Art Panels	Panels made will be presented at the gallery in town.
Term 3
Maori Myths and Legends Social Studies		In this unit we will be looking at a unit based on Maori history in Taranaki including: Maori art Early Maori in Taranaki	This is McLeod and Hurlestone Shield term! Lots of school rugby and netball . Weekly throughout the term. Interschool Play day! Interschool debates Interschool Cross Country Our group is joining the Stratford Primary Schools Cross Country event. Chess Competition with our Schools Group
New Zealand Speech Board Exams Oral Language
		A school wide focus. Completed in 2003 and 2004, this has had very positive results with children's oral language developing markedly. We are maintaining this thrust. Exams about week 6. Children are involved in preparation for roughly four weeks. A feedback sheet.
Science (Changed 29.7.2005) Science		We plan to have a three week unit late in term 3 and for the children to then develop their own small scientific investigation from the unit of work. They will have the holidays to complete aspects of their investigation and then the first week of term 4 to present their finding back in class. Feedback sheet
Term 4
Teachers are starting a unit in term 4 of their own choice, based on children's and teachers needs and interests. Year 7 and 8 and 3 and 4 are staring on a conservation theme, redeveloping the schools waste management!		Yr 7 and 8 Developing a waste management at Toko School!! Camp Preparations and Camp theme week.		Planning for camp activities.This year the Year 7 and 8's are heading to Napier. Meanwhile back at school a school wide unit with lots of cross groups based on 'Nation Celebration"!!
Children from Year 5 to 8 complete their independent study to show how they have learned and grown and improved this year. Essential Skills Yr 5 and Up!		This is an independent research based unit completed by the children, demonstrating their development of research skills. (Learning how to learn star) It is held at the end of each year for children from Year 5 and up (if they are ready for it) and it is assessed by the teacher on some points key criteria and learning intentions, but self assessment is an integral component of this unit. The comparisons over the years will be very useful. Excellent contribution to the special book! Feedback Sheet
School Production Preparation Oral Visual Music and Movement		At the end of the year a significant amount of time is used in the development of the end of year concert. Year 7 and 8 take on the majority of the "acting", however,dance and movement, and singing is a large part of the preparation as well.
