Stars of Learning... This is a new school wide theme. It is a melding of aspects of our reward
system in the school (previously known as merit mentions) and our charter.
It is what is important around here! Now known as Learning
Stars. We
want to let the children know all about them
and
encourage their language and use throughout
the school. |
Focus of the first three weeks is developing
classroom rules, expectations, routines, book layout, presentations, IT
standards and shared
beliefs. The new stars of learning will also be introduced to the children.
These are school wide focus on: Partnership, personal best, challenging curriculum, learning environments, foundation skills and learning how to learn. |

What is so Special about Taranaki? Science / Social Studies
|
A 4 to 5 week unit focusing on Taranaki. The children
will discover what is special about Taranaki, going back through history
to the Maori Wars through Dickie Barret and the Taranaki Stories and then
what of the future! |

| Swimming and Water SAFETY | Basic Skills for each level of the school. Clearly water confidence in the early years through to stroke development and then competence in a variety of strokes. | |||

| ANP Advance Numeracy Project will be starting. This is a Professional Development contract for the teachers and the children. ANP will focus on the delivery of the number strand and involve a minimum of 1 hour a day of mathematics. This is a big development for the children and teachers involved. | ||||
Methnex Investigations Mathematics |
A Year 7 and 8 unit focusing on research and investigations skills in a mathematical context. We enter into the group investigations for year 7 and 8 rather than other areas as I believe it develops a cooperative atmosphere in the classroom. A feedback sheet. | |||

In this unit we will be looking
at a unit based on Maori history in Taranaki including: Maori art Early Maori in Taranaki |

New Zealand Speech Board Exams Oral Language |

| A school wide focus. Completed in 2003 and 2004, this has had very positive results with children's oral language developing markedly. We are maintaining this thrust. Exams about week 6. Children are involved in preparation for roughly four weeks. A feedback sheet. | ||||

We plan to have a three week
unit late in term 3 and for the children to then develop their own small
scientific investigation from the unit of work. They will have the holidays
to complete aspects of their investigation and then

Camp Preparations and Camp theme week.

Planning for camp activities.This year the Year 7 and 8's are heading to Napier. Meanwhile back at school a school wide unit with lots of cross groups based on 'Nation Celebration"!! | |||
Children from Year 5 to 8 complete their independent
study to show how they have learned and grown and improved this year. |
This is an independent research based unit
completed by the children, demonstrating their development of
research skills.
(Learning how to learn star) It is held at the end of each year for children from Year 5 and up (if they are ready for it) and it is assessed by the teacher on some points key criteria and learning intentions, but self assessment is an integral component of this unit. Music and Movement |
At the end of the year a significant amount of time is used in the development of the end of year concert. Year 7 and 8 take on the majority of the "acting", however,dance and movement, and singing is a large part of the preparation as well. | |||
